- Going for Gold
5th July 2012
London 2012 is just a few weeks away and staff at the Mears Group will be closely following the fortunes of team GB.
When London won its bid to host the 2012 Olympics, Mears committed to supporting a number of the UK’s best up and coming sporting talents. The Future Champions Programme began in 2007 and has supported 24 young people from the ages of 11 - 20 with their sporting endeavours. Mears has provided financial support and given training and work experience opportunities to the young hopefuls.
Helen Scott, one of Mears Future Champions has just been selected to represent Great Britain in the Paracycling Squad. Helen will be one of the four tandem pilots who will be competing at the Paralympic Games in London this summer.
Helen Scott; said;
‘I am so happy and excited to be competing in my first Paralympic Games, and I just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone at Mears for their support. I really wouldn’t have made it this far without Mears’ help. I’ll do my best to make you all proud in 9 weeks time!”
Fiona Norris, Customer and Community Manager at Mears in the West Midlands who mentored Helen said:
“Mears has a long standing commitment to supporting the communities where we work. Helen and the other Future Champions are all great role models for young people. Mears Midland Heart have sponsored Helen since August 2009, shortly before she won a place at the coveted under 23 GB Academy. Helen's dream was to win a place at the 2012 games and become a world class cyclist and we are so very proud that she has achieved this. We will all be crossing our fingers for Helen and our other Future Champions and wish them the very best of luck."
