Mears Home Improvement
Mr and Mrs V live in a detached bungalow but Mr V, who has mobility difficulties, had been unable to enter or leave his home without assistance. When a Mears Personal Advisor visited the couple they knew that Mr V was likely to qualify for a Disabled Facilities Grant.
An occupational therapist helped identify home adaptations that would give Mr V greater independence. These included: an electric step lift, that would enable Mr V to get in and out of his home unaided; replacing the bath he couldn't use with a level access shower; and widening internal doors to make it easier to manoeuvre his wheelchair between rooms.
With the support of Mears these simple changes have helped both Mr and Mrs V to continue living in their home and given them the security of knowing that, in an emergency, they would be able to leave the property unaided.
The provision of aids and adaptations through its Home Improvement service is Mears response to fully joined up local services that empower individuals to live independently at home with the minimum intervention required.
Rapid response to repair or adaptation needs can help get someone home from hospital sooner, or reduce the number or length of home care-services visits, leading to significant cost reductions as well as giving a greater sense of dignity and independence to the individual.
As well as practical home adaptations such as the installation of adapted bathrooms ad kitchens, ramps and grab rails, Mears can source and install personal aids. We are also introducing new technologies that enhance independence such as telecare-services and sensors to provide round the clock reassurance for vulnerable people and their families.
