Supporting Armed Forces Day

As part of our commitment to signing the Armed Forces Covenant, Mears is fully supporting Armed Forces Day on Saturday 24th June.Armed Forces Day is a chance to show your support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community, from serving troops to Service families, veterans and cadets.Since signing the Armed Forces Covenant in 2015, we have launched our Military Veterans Working Group, which actively helps ex-services personnel find work, training, apprenticeships and work experience in both the housing and care sectors.The group met recently at Mears’ Rotherham Training Academy with the military charity Regular Forces Employment Association (RFEA) to find ways to help veterans find jobs and training. Our Mears Learning team is now working closely with RFEA to see how we can open existing schemes to veterans as well as developing new training specifically for them.The Armed Forces Covenant pledges support to those who are serving or have served in the Armed Forces and their families, and includes:

  • Promoting the fact that we are an armed forces-friendly organisation;
  • Seeking to support the employment of veterans young and old:
  • Striving to support the employment of service spouses and partners;
  • Endeavouring to offer a degree of flexibility in granting leave for service spouses and partners, during and after a partners deployment;
  • Seeking to support our employees who choose to be members of the Reserve Forces, including by accommodating their training and deployment where possible;
  • Offering support to our local cadet units, either in our local community or in local schools where possible;
  • Aiming to actively participate in Armed Forces Day.

Andrew Farmer, Senior Contracts Manager for Mears and member of our Military Veterans Working Group, said: “We are very proud that Mears has signed the Armed Forces Covenant.“As an ex-service veteran, I understand the influence that public recognition and support can have on both serving and veteran personnel and their families."

CASE STUDY

Andrew Farmer, Mears Senior Contracts Manager and ex-Royal Engineer.

“I joined Mears last year after 24 years in the Army – in fact, I left the Army on the Friday and started at Mears on the Monday!“The transition has been easier perhaps than I expected. It was the first job interview I had – I was very open-minded and thought that if I didn’t get the job it would be a good learning experience.“But I did get it – the skills and experience I’d gained in the Royal Engineers were invaluable and also transferable into a ‘normal’ job.“I thought I’d miss the comradery, but there is still very much the team mentality here at Mears and I still meet up regularly with my old Army mates.“Finally, after being based all over the world and moving 12 times in almost as many years, I’m happy to settle down in our very own house!”
