Mears Group has been awarded a major new 10-year partnership with Birmingham City Council to deliver repairs, maintenance, and planned investment work across 11,500 homes in central and west Birmingham. This contract represents one of our most significant projects in the city and will create a wide range of opportunities across our operational teams.
About the Role:
We are looking for a motivated and organised Health and Safety Advisor to join our dedicated team in Birmingham. You will play a key role in supporting operational teams, ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation, company procedures and best practice, while promoting a positive safety culture across the contract. You will provide guidance, carry out inspections and audits, and work closely with colleagues, clients and contractors to ensure safe and effective service delivery.
Duties:
- Support the implementation and maintenance of health and safety systems, ensuring compliance with legislation and company procedures
- Carry out regular site inspections and audits across contracts to monitor standards and identify areas for improvement
- Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses, ensuring thorough reporting and implementation of corrective actions
- Monitor compliance trackers and follow up on actions to ensure timely completion
- Provide clear health and safety advice and guidance to operational teams, managers and subcontractors
- Assist with the preparation and review of risk assessments, method statements and safe systems of work
- Maintain accurate records and ensure all documentation is up to date and compliant
- Support operational teams in promoting a positive health and safety culture across the business
- Work closely with managers and supervisors to ensure safe planning and delivery of works
- Respond to health and safety queries in a timely and professional manner
- Assist with reporting, audits and compliance reviews, identifying trends and recommending improvements
- Ensure all activities are carried out in line with company procedures, legislation and best practice standards
Role Criteria:
- Previous experience in a Health and Safety Advisor or similar role within construction, housing or maintenance environments
- GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths
- Experience working in a fast-paced, pressurised environment
- Strong IT skills with the ability to use compliance systems, reporting tools and audit trackers
- Excellent time management, organisational and communication skills
- A proactive approach with the confidence to challenge unsafe practices and influence behaviour
- Good understanding of health and safety legislation, regulations and best practice within a maintenance or construction setting
