First groundwork starts on Barnet's new council homes

In partnership with their contractor Mears, Barnet Homes officially started the groundwork on 16 October at the construction site of the first new council homes to be built in Barnet since 1991.

Tracey Lees, Chief Executive at Barnet Homes said: "This is an important moment for Barnet Homes who along with our contractors Mears are building the first new council homes in the borough for more than two decades.

These homes will provide much needed accommodation to three families and will be the start of a larger programme of construction of additional homes in Barnet."

The homes, which are being built in Alexandra Road, Muswell Hill, will consist of two four bedroom homes and one three bedroom home. They will be completed by February 2014 and built using a mix of modern and traditional construction methods, thereby reducing the overall programme of works on site.

Jane Nelson, Executive Director at Mears Group and local Barnet resident, said: "Mears is delighted to be working with Barnet Homes to deliver the first social housing to be built in Barnet for many years. We are using modern methods of construction to minimise inconvenience to local residents and to fast-track the build so the new tenants can move into their new homes as soon as possible.

Jane continued: "We have also committed to maintaining the properties for the next 10 years so tenants can have confidence in the long-term quality of their homes. I take particular pleasure in noting that the two apprentices who are helping to build these homes are part of the same local Mears team that will maintain them over the next decade".

Once completed, the properties will be let out on new five year tenancies. The intention is that tenants will move to a smaller property when their family has left home, releasing the house for another family. These homes form the start of a larger programme of new builds which will see further homes being constructed over the next two years.
