Gold medalist to open Gateshead’s Local Employment Forum

British athlete Stephen Miller will open the Local Employment Advisory Forum on Tuesday 8 July at Gateshead College. The triple gold medalist who competes in the fields of Paralympic club and discus will open the event for young people at 10:30am.Mears Group PLC, the leading social housing repairs and maintenance provider in the UK, is running its third annual series of Local Employment Advisory Forums (LEAF) to provide career and skills development opportunities for people across the UK.The Gateshead forum which is being run in partnership with the Gateshead Housing Company follows events in Glasgow and Durham, will take place on Tuesday 8 July at Gateshead College, The Academy for Sport, Gateshead International Stadium, Nelson Road, Gateshead, NE10 OEF. By invitation only, students from local schools and colleges are invited to attend the 10:00am to 12 noon where they will be joined by special guest Stephen Miller.All local people over 18 are invited to come along from 12 noon to 3:00pm. As the job search can be particularly hard for people who have never worked and for those who have been out of the job market for a while, delegates will be able to receive information on skills required for particular roles within local businesses, along with interview tips and practical advice on CV writing and job applications. There will also be an opportunity to find out about courses available at Gateshead College to improve their skills, knowledge and abilities and receive support to apply for a position within a chosen career when a vacancy arises.A whole host of local organisations including businesses, social housing landlords and charities will be on hand to offer guidance on employment and gaining skills and qualifications needed for work. Those attending include Mears, Home Group NE, Gateshead Housing, National Careers Service, Beecham Peacock and Nat West. The event will be a fantastic opportunity to receive free face-to-face advice from organisations and find out more about these organisations and what employers are looking for from candidates.Jane Winnard, Customer Relationship Manager, Mears said: “Stephen Miller is an inspirational athlete and we are delighted that he is able to join us to officially open the Local Employment Advisory Forums.
