Latest Mears community project gives residents flora and fauna sanctuary free of charge

Renowned for getting to the grass roots of community projects, leading social housing repairs and maintenance provider Mears Group has worked its magic once again - this time for the residents at Jervis Court in Burntwood, Staffordshire.

Called upon by one of the UK's top ten housing and regeneration groups, Midland Heart, the task, headed by the Midland Heart branch of Mears, was to give a new lease of life to an outside communal area.

In just 12 days, the combined Mears and Midland Heart resident team dug foundations, laid a patio area and erected fencing. Today the Jervis Court community garden is used and enjoyed by residents and their families to meet and socialise.

"We are very pleased with the community project undertaken by Mears," explains Gareth Hopkins, Customer Involvement Officer at Midland Heart. "It has empowered our residents to work together to help transform their communal areas."

Peter Docherty, Acting Caretaker for the Court said of the new area: "It has made such a difference to the quality of life of the residents. It used to be a bit of a wasted space; it is now a great communal area and is a place that brings our little community together."

The project is one of many initiatives undertaken by the company in a bid to provide sustainable improvement and support to the communities within which it works.

"At Mears locally, we're lucky to have over 100 talented people who are actively encouraged by the company to spend a day of work supporting community initiatives," explains Chris Thacker, Mears Midland Heart, Branch Manager. "Our community Action Programme will give the equivalent of tens of thousands of pounds worth of labour and materials each year to local services making a positive difference. The Jervis Court communal garden area support is an excellent example of what Mears support can achieve in the local community."
