Urban Oasis in Hunslet

Mears has launched a new project to help people make their local areas greener and nicer places to live, with a fun-packed family event at the Hemingways estate in Hunslet.Project Urban Oasis aims to inspire people to improve pockets of green space on their doorstep through practical activities such as clean ups, planting and food growing, which it is also hoped will encourage healthy eating. The half term event offered free pumpkin carving and games, with an opportunity to meet Ronnie the Rhino, Leeds Rhinos' larger than life mascot. Residents were also asked for their preferences about some planned improvements to the estate, including the creation of a community garden. The event was also supported by staff from Direct Line Group, Mears, Groundwork and Housing Leeds who cleared overgrown planters, tidied path edges, and planted daffodil bulbs.Project Urban Oasis is being funded by Mears which repair and maintain homes on behalf of Housing Leeds and is being delivered by Groundwork. The two-year project will be launched on other estates in Leeds.
