Resident Welfare Officer

Location: Huddersfield & Kirklees – Field based

Salary up to £29,856.80 per annum plus a £3,500 car allowance

Contract: Full time, Permanent, 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8.30am – 5:30pm. Expected to be on patch by 8.30am

Exception to take part in the OOH rota. 1 in 7 weeks covering Monday to Monday

About the Role

Mears Housing Management is seeking a Resident Welfare Officer to support the delivery of a new service designed to help vulnerable individuals avoid homelessness and transition into settled accommodation. This is a front-line role combining administrative, practical, and pastoral responsibilities. You will provide support to service users, helping them manage interim housing and access the resources they need to move forward. The role demands a balance of hands-on support and efficient case management, with a strong focus on safeguarding and service delivery.

The patch area will be predominantly Huddersfield however; you'll be expected to travel the whole Yorkshire and Humber area if the business requires. The Resident Welfare Officer role forms part of a front-line delivery team providing accommodation and support through-

  • Responsibility to assess, record and plan welfare and support needs for each client assigned to you.
  • In line with Mears Equality, Diversity and Inclusion policy, delivery of welfare and support services to our service users ensuring a tailored approach to meet individual needs whilst being culturally aware and sensitive of circumstances.
  • Delivery of welfare and support services to ensure full contractual compliance and successful outcomes of all Key Performance Indicators and service delivery targets.
  • Delivery of service through sign posting, direct referral, liaising with other agencies/organisations.
  • Develop and build relationships with other support and service providers within region.
  • Management and mitigation of service user well- being risk and escalation in line with policy and procedure.
  • Delivery of service to ensure safeguarding and welfare are fully considered in line with processes.
  • Maintaining boundaries and being resilient to ensure a professional and well define service is provided to meet the needs of the service users.
  • Working collaboratively with Housing Managers to deliver a seamless service in meeting the individual and property needs of all our service users.
  • Delivery of performance and service reporting as requested by line manager, escalating all risks and concerns to ensure full resolution.
  • Incident reporting where welfare concerns occur – safeguarding – identify
    concerns
  • Clean properties and turn property around when void
  • Raise work orders for repairs (including void properties) and follow up on
    completed work

Role Criteria:

  • Demonstrable experience in a similar role within housing, support, or welfare services
  • Strong communication skills with both clients and colleagues
  • Ability to manage conflict and challenging situations effectively
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and general IT competence
  • Ability to work independently and use your own initiative
  • Good understanding of local support services and housing pathways
  • Strong focus on safeguarding
  • Strong time management and ability to balance competing priorities
  • A full UK Driving Licence (essential for travel between properties and appointments)
  • Naturally supportive, trustworthy, empathetic, and patient approach
  • Resilience, teamwork
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
  •  You will be supportive, trustworthy, a good listener, approachable and empathetic to others by nature as well as being patient, open, able to think on your feet with a strong desire to help others

To drive a Mears vehicle, you must be aged over 21 have held your license over 3 months and have less than 9 points.
