Mears has joined up with Lambeth Council’s Career Cluster to help local schools provide better careers advice.
As a member of the Cluster, we will be working alongside schools and colleges to design and deliver high quality careers guidance programmes for their students.
There are twelve Careers Clusters in total – all London based – and Mears is also part of the one for Islington. The Clusters aim to help teachers understand London’s job market, provide opportunities for pupils to try out different employer-based activities and support pupils into work placements and internships.
In Lambeth, Mears has been matched with London Nautical School, based near Blackfriars, where we kicked off our programme with an introductory talk to 60 teachers on 4th September. Over the coming months, we will be speaking to pupils about apprenticeships in assemblies, delivering carpentry, electrician and tiling workshops, and carrying out CV and interview workshops. Going into 2019, we also hope to provide two work experience placements at Mears.
Mears’ Sandra Butler said:
“This is a great opportunity for Mears to contribute to the communities we work in and to invest in the workforce of the future. We are facing a skills crisis in trades which will affect our business in the future. So it’s in our interest to do what we can to get young people to consider careers in building maintenance.
We’re really looking forward to working with Lambeth Council and with London Nautical School’s teachers and pupils over the next few months.”
