Design Excellence award for Mears New Homes

Two of our housing developments in Hatfield have scooped top awards in the Design Excellence category at the prestigious Hertfordshire Building Futures Awards.

The winning developments Lilac Close (formerly Furzen Crescent) and Lime Tree Court (previously called Garden Avenue) were projects delivered by Mears New Homes in partnership with Welwyn Hatfield Council and architects Rock Townsend.

The two projects were previously council-owned garage sites, extensively re-developed to provide 22 new flats and seven new houses as part of the first Council Housing scheme in the borough for 25 years.

The contemporary ‘mews style’ homes are stylish, practical and energy efficient, meeting current best practice standards and enhanced HQI spatial standards and Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4.

Commenting on the design, the judges said:

"The quality of design and thought sets a precedent for Council development, showing what a pared-down functional play on traditional forms can achieve. Small is beautiful."

Our Managing Director of New Homes, Tim Carpenter, said:

“We are absolutely delighted to have won such a prestigious award. It demonstrates our continued commitment to providing people with quality affordable homes and enhanced value to our housing partners."
