Mears response to Spring Budget 2017

In response to the Chancellor’s Spring Budget today, Mears Executive Director Alan Long said:Mears Group welcomes the announcement of additional funding for social care by the Chancellor in his Spring Budget today, as well as the promise of a green paper on long-term financing and strategic direction for the sector. We also welcome acknowledgement by the Chancellor that the social care sector is in desperate need and, with an ageing population, likely to face further pressures. However, we wait to see if £2 billion over three years is enough to pull the sector out of its current crisis, when recent reports say the social care system faces a £1.9 billion funding gap this year alone. We, along with many other care providers and care sector experts, have long warned that social care is in crisis and desperately needs a long-term, well-funded plan – we hope today’s announcements are a step towards this.If this additional funding goes directly to frontline services, it will have a significant impact on social care provision and, as a result, the lives of some of the UK’s most vulnerable people.
