Mears Group carries out refurbishment work at Leeds Baby Bank, helping improve the charity’s premises so it can continue providing vital support to families experiencing poverty across the city.

Over the past six months, Mears colleagues in Leeds have carried out a range of improvements at the charity’s headquarters.

The support has included joinery, electrical and gas works, as well as painting and general improvements to help make the space safer and more functional for volunteers and the families who rely on the service.

Mears teams have also supported the charity through donations, contributing essential items as part of a Reverse Advent Calendar initiative to help families in need.

Leeds Baby Bank provides essential supplies for families with children aged up to five, including nappies, formula, stair gates, buggies, clothing, and toys.

The charity plays a critical role in supporting parents and carers across the city who are struggling to afford basic items for their children.

Further work is now planned to continue improving the building, including installing sections of ceiling grid track that were removed by a previous tenant.

The improvements will ensure the premises are fully compliant and fit for purpose for the charity’s ongoing work.

Nicola Berry, Customer Success Manager at Mears Group, said:

Helping Leeds Baby Bank over the past six months has been incredibly rewarding for our teams. The charity provides an essential service to families across Leeds, and we’re proud to have been able to help improve the space they operate from. We’re looking forward to returning to complete the next stage of works, to help ensure the building is ready for the volunteers and families who depend on it.

Faye Freeman, Trustee at Leeds Baby Bank said:

The impact of Mears’ support on Leeds Baby Bank cannot be overstated. Beyond their financial contributions and donations of baby essentials, Mears mobilised their skilled workforce, including painters, joiners, electricians, and several other trades, to undertake substantial refurbishment work within our unit. They provided not only the labour, but all of the materials needed to carry out the improvements. This level of social value support gave us the ability to create a safer, more organised, and more dignified environment for families who depend on us. At a time of exceptional demand, Mears stepped in and ensured we could continue delivering essential items to children across Leeds. Their commitment has left a lasting legacy on our service and the families we support.

As part of its social value commitment, Mears Group provides its employees with two days a year to volunteer for good causes. Through the Mears Foundation, it supports a range of initiatives that help to alleviate food and digital poverty, social isolation and projects that help to keep the planet healthy.
