Dave Milner, Operations Manager; Simon Bone, Carpenter; Kiren Fernandes, CLIC Sargent’s Area Fundraising Manager; Thomas Day & Chris Day, Commercial Manager.Staff at Mears, who provide repairs and maintenance services for many Bristol clients, need new trainers after undertaking the Bristol 10K closely followed by a further 20K walk, raising over £1,700 for CLIC Sargent.Team members completed the 10K run despite blustery conditions. Just four days later, they completed double the distance whilst stomping along the River Avon Trail from Bristol to Bath with Mears’ Chairman Bob Holt. Blazing sunshine and blisters didn’t stop them from successfully completing the walk in less than six hours.CLIC Sargent is a charity close to the hearts of many in Mears as they are supporting nine year old Thomas, the son of Mears Commercial Leader, Chris Day.In 2008 when Thomas was only three years old, he became very unwell and his family was devastated to learn that he had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. Thomas battled through many rounds of chemotherapy and, after nearly three years, he was finally in remission and could start living his life. In January of this year, aged eight, Thomas started to feel poorly again. Thomas and his family were devastated to learn that the Leukaemia had returned. This time it was more aggressive and needed a more intensive round of treatment with much more time spent in hospital.Despite all he is going through, Thomas always has a smile on his face. CLIC Sargent have supported Thomas and his family all the way through his illness by providing medical and emotional support. A CLIC Sargent nurse visits Thomas weekly reducing the need to go to hospital, this means he can spend more time with his family and friends. Thomas's nurse has even visited his school to meet his friends and help them understand his illness.Chris Day, who completed both challenges, said: “The team and I are delighted to be able to support such a fantastic organisation. We are thankful to The Mears Foundation and all of our sponsors for the money raised. Thomas and I are very grateful for the ongoing support from CLIC Sargent.”CLIC Sargent’s Area Fundraising Manager for the South West, Kiren Fernandes, said: “We’d like to thank Chris, the staff at Mears and of course the Mears Foundation for all of their fantastic fundraising for CLIC Sargent. To date Thomas’ Fund has raised almost £10,000 for CLIC Sargent. The money from Thomas’ Fund could help CLIC Sargent keep a family together during treatment by allowing them to stay at one of our Homes from Home just over 10 months. Here families will have access to free self-catering accommodation near to specialist children’s cancer treatment centres, which are often many miles from a family’s own home.”
