Serving our Community Projects

Mears Shepway often works with other East Kent Housing branches (Canterbury, Dover and Thanet) to bring residents together and in 2016 we carried out a huge variety of activities over and above day to day repair work including: tenant DIY training; recruiting apprentices; Macmillan coffee mornings; sponsoring the EKH garden competitions and the Tenant Star Awards.
Mears Shepway also carried out projects specific to the Shepway Area:

Action for Homeless

Pam, who runs the organisation Action for Homeless, approached Manager Dan Bestford at the East Kent Housing Tenant Star Awards. She was running a project to serve warm food to the homeless and vulnerable people in need but they did not have any premises and she was doing this out in the cold and rain. Pam wanted our help to find and provide somewhere dry and warm from which to serve the food.

Dan teamed up with our client East Kent Housing and located a suitable disused garage, which was cleaned up, completely redecorated and kitchen units with a breakfast bar were installed.

Approximately 20 people use the facility regularly and Pam serves food on a Monday & Friday between 18:00 – 19:00. Dan and some of his team have already signed up to help out with this deserving cause.

In 2017, as well as continuing many of our 2016 activities, Mears is focussing on working with local schools; running workshops that fit with the curriculum but also give advice and guidance about opportunities in repairs and maintenance and apprenticeship vacancies in 2018.

And watch this space – Mears will be running brand new workshops later this year for tenants who would like to try their hand at upcycling furniture.
